Only 1% of Valentine’s gifts to be jewellery, says insurer

As jewellers prepare for the floods of last-minute Valentine’s shoppers this weekend, one insurance company has forecast that only 1% of UK shoppers will choose jewellery as a Valentine’s gift.

It found that out of these few, shoppers from Scotland and Yorkshire are the most likely to buy jewellery as a gift this year.

Aon Private Clients also expects a third of shoppers to spend less on all kinds of love tokens this year, but 45% will hold strong and maintain the same level of spend as last year.

Aon Private Clients managing director Ben Holroyd-Doveton said: “Traditionally, Valentine’s Day is when we see a spike in spending on gifts and our clients adding expensive items of jewellery to their insurance policies. We were expecting to see lower levels of jewellery purchases this year as a result of the economic climate and the relatively high price of gold forcing up the price of jewellery.”
