Weak eBay sales prompt Ancient and Modern Jewellers to launch site

Sales via eBay for retailer Ancient and Modern Jewellers were down 40% from last year in December and January, prompting it to launch its own ecommerce site.

In response to tough trading on eBay, Ancient and Modern Jewellers has launched its own online business www.iconicwatches.co.uk independent from eBay.

Ancient and Modern Jewellers director Johnny Marr said: “Our sales have been down by at least 25 to 30% over the last two years but the last two months have seen sales fall even further to a level where we are nearly 40% down on the same period last year.”

He added: “Things have become increasingly difficult in trading watches via eBay over the last few months and this channel seems to be getting weaker and weaker as a means of selling watches. Like other eBay sellers we have now launched our own website and are hoping that this will help to improve business.”

The figures suggest that some areas of trade are still suffering despite media reports that the country is recovering from recession.
