Stars parade in platinum and diamonds at the Oscars
Retailer jewellers looking to cash in on Oscar trends should be stocking platinum and coloured diamonds.
Diamonds were the order of the day and actresses chose platinum to showcase their diamonds to the fullest. Suzi Jarrell from the Platinum Guild UK said that over the last few years platinum has become the metal of choice for red carpet events. She commented: “I think it is good that celebrities are choosing platinum and selecting top brands. Platinum of course shows off the diamonds perfectly and allows them to sparkle.”
Best Actress Sandra Bullock opted for platinum and diamond earrings from her personal collection by Neil Lane, while Kate Winslet dazzled wearing a yellow 19ct diamond pendant and earrings from Tiffany and Co. Demi Moore wore platinum and diamond bracelets, a platinum and diamond ring with a pearl, and a vintage platinum and diamond hair clip by Van Cleef & Arpels. Dame Helen Mirren made a splash wearing a platinum and diamond necklace and earrings, and a diamond cuff by Chopard. Penelope Cruz also chose Chopard, wearing diamond drop earrings and three diamond and platinum bracelets. A Chopard salesperson said: 'I would say the trends are several bracelets and big cuffs. I think we'll be seeing this as a growing style on the market.'
Kate Winslet’s yellow diamond and platinum necklace was made bespoke for the star by Tiffany’s, drawing the rich history of the brand. Tiffany’s director of media relations Carson Glover said retailers could expect growing demand for coloured gems. He commented: “ Coloured diamonds have always been a sought after due to their purity and beauty and we are seeing more people understanding their value. In general we expect to see a greater use of coloured diamonds in everyday jewellery.”
