Clarice Price Thomas wins EC One competition
Clarice Price Thomas has been announced as the winner of London retailer EC One’s graduate jewellery design competition, EC One Unsigned.
A panel of judges, including designers, makers and marketing experts, made the decision from the four finalists, Pip Jolley, Julie Impens, Clarice Price Thomas and wild card finalist Tom Wilson.
Price Thomas’s collection won the judges’ vote and her success was announced at an event that took place on Tuesday evening.
Jos Skeates, co-owner of EC One, which won the Boutique Category at the UK Jewellery Awards 2011, said: “We were so pleased with the level of entries for the second year of EC One Unsigned and the four finalists could each have easily won on different merits. However, Clarice has produced work that captured the imagination of the judges and we are thrilled that she has been chosen as the winner.
“Her meticulous attention to detail and innovative way of bringing traditional watch-making skills to jewellery won us over. We expect great things of Clarice and she could easily translate her work into a viable collection for most boutique jewellers.”
Price Thomas’s Time Never Stops collection was created from a fascination with horology and time and is an intricate amalgamation of watch making and jewellery design. As the daughter of a watchmaker, she has grown up surrounded by watch making and design and was taught from an early age how to take a watch apart to reveal the hand crafted pieces inside.
For her collection she was able to use traditional clock making machinery to create detailed handmade pieces of jewellery.
Price Thomas said: “The beauty of horology has forever remained hidden inside the cases of watches and clocks, however, in this collection these pieces are momentarily separated from time to create key centre points for pieces of jewellery.”
The Time Never Stops collection includes detailed necklaces, earrings and rings, some of which feature moving parts that, when turned reveal the word love. The original ‘Time Never Stops’ necklace features seven cogs; three slightly larger ones in silver are hand engraved with the word ‘love’ while four smaller cogs plated with 18ct yellow gold sit round the larger ones. Turning any one of the cogs makes all of them move in perfect union making the word ‘love’ align and disappear.
As the winner, Price Thomas will now work closely with Jos and Alison Skeates and EC One’s in-house goldsmith Jude Huntley to create a collection to be sold by EC One.
