Elizabeth Taylor jewellery auction breaks records

A collection of actress Elizabeth Taylor’s jewellery has fetched $116m (£74.9m) at a New York auction, breaking records.

The Christie’s sale, The Collection of Elizabeth Taylor: The Legendary Jewels Evening Sale, was the most valuable jewellery auction in history.

The sale, which marked the beginning of a four-day series of auctions devoted to Elizabeth Taylor, was 100% sold by lot and 100% by value, with 24 of the 80 jewels fetching over $1 million and six jewels over $5 million.

Seven new world auction records were established: price per carat for a colorless diamond and for a ruby; a pair of natural pearl ear pendants; a pearl jewel; an Indian jewel and an emerald jewel.

The highlight was the sale of the La Peregrina necklace, featuring the 16th century pearl, sold for $11.8m (£7.6m) breaking the world auction record for a pearl jewellery. Other items sold included an emerald and diamond pendant brooch by Bulgari and a ruby and diamond ring by Van Cleef & Arpels.
