Swarovski presents Gem Visions 2012 trends
Swarovski Gems forecast that next year’s diverse trends will range from 1950’s Mad Men styles to futuristic looks reminiscent of pop star Lady GaGa at its Gem Visions 2012 trends presentation, which took place last week.
Swarovski Gems, which specialises in both manmade and real gemstones, worked alongside leading independent jewellery and trend experts to produce the report, which was presented by head of gem creative Birgit Rieder to a select audience including Retail Jeweller and jewellery designers Ana de Costa and Babette Wasserman.
Rieder said that at the Basel trade show this year she saw trends veer towards lower carat gold jewellery and fine jewellery brands offering more affordable silver lines, steel in men’s jewellery, and ceramics from brands such as Meissen.
The brand’s own five design directions for next year include the 1950’s inspired Studio theme, which features neutral colours and is reminiscent of Hollywood stars such as Grace Kelly. Speaking about the Studio theme she said: “Tom Ford is the trend setter. It’s inspired by the 1950s and 60s and is very Mad Men and A Single Man. It’s a celebration of elegance and the end customer is very feminine.”
Rieder said popstar Katy Perry’s look best-epitomises the intense jewel colours of the Fantasy theme, while Lady GaGa can be seen parading the earthy and metallic colours of the sci-fi futuristic tribal inspired Fiction trend. Speaking about the pop star’s infamous style and influence on fashion trends she said: “We believe that Lady GaGa is a good role model for all of us. If she can wear a meat hat, then we shouldn’t worry about mixing certain colours.”
The final two themes include the architectural, abstract, geometric and slightly 90s techno inspired Luminescence trend, which will be aimed at younger consumers, and finally the retro but yet modern Nouvelle Vague trend.
