TV ad campaign helps Prestons of Bolton enjoy a record Christmas

The Northern store saw like-for-like sales increase by 19% during December 2011 compared with December 2010.

Diamond engagement rings sales increased by the same percentage and the new floor of Pandora enjoyed sales greater than anticipated.

Managing director of the store Karl Massey said that he was “highly delighted with the increase in sales in what was undoubtedly a tough trading climate” and credited the store’s Christmas television advertising campaign for the reason behind the growth.

“In the 1970s and 1980s customers came to Bolton from far and wide, and through our distinctive TV advertising campaigns over the past two years, we are seeing that happen again,” said Massey.

The campaign, shot in black and white featured a festive setting for a marriage proposal with a young couple sitting by an open fire with the snow falling outside. The young man hands his girlfriend a beautifully packaged box, which to her great disappointment contains an iron. As soon as she lifts the iron out of its box she sees the ‘marry me’ sticker and he instantly hands her a ring box.

The ring shown at the end of the commercial is a diamond solitaire. The 30 second commercial was aired on ITV Granada and ran during prime time spots during December.
