White gold popular for engagement rings in Greater Manchester while platinum dominates in London

White gold is most popular for engagement rings in Greater Manchester while platinum is most popular in London, according to research by The Diamond Store.

In a survey commissioned by etailer thediamondstore.co.uk, white gold was found to be the most popular metal for engagement rings overall across the UK while platinum came second and finally yellow gold. Yellow gold was found to be most popular in Cambridge.

Meanwhile, the top spending county was found to be West Glamorgan (£2,535) based on an average spend over a 12 month period, West Lothian (£2,407) and Glasgow (£2,179) and the least spending counties were County Antrim (£509), Lancashire (£741) and North Yorkshire (£779).

Speaking about the results, The Diamond Store managing director Gary Ingram said: “The [result] I am surprised at is that people in London as a rule, buy more Platinum and people in Manchester, as a rule buy more white gold. Is that just a quirk of these statistics or is that something that can be backed up by other retailers with shops in both locations?”
