Plymouth-based independent Drakes has been awarded the top prize at this year’s Retail Jeweller Inspiring Independents event held in association with the Company of Master Jewellers (CMJ).
The winners of this year’s competition were unveiled in a dedicated lunchtime awards ceremony held at London’s Grange City Hotel on October 14.
The lunch event celebrated all of the top 100 Inspiring Independents who make up this year’s list with highly commended accolades awarded to the top retailer in each different region of the UK as well as some separate category winners.
The top 100 retailers were voted for by the industry and then the individual winners and highly commended recipients were decided by a specialist supplier panel.
Drakes was the overwhelming choice to take home the top award, praised by the supplier panel for its friendly and collaborative approach to business in addition to its forward-thinking attitude.
Other worthy winners in the separate categories were Brighton’s Baroque Bespoke Jewellery which was awarded Boutique Retailer of the Year, independent chain Mococo which took home the award for Branded Retailer of the Year and Ed Ferris managing director of T&E Ferris, which owns Swag and Burrels, who was awarded the Business Owner of the Year accolade.
The regional highly commended businesses are outlined below and then Drakes was selected from this list as the retailer which received the most overall votes from the supplier panel.
- · Scotland & Ireland – Laing, Edinburgh
- · The North – Hugh Rice
- · The Midlands – Lumbers
- · The South – Swag
- · The South West & Wales – Drakes
Retail Jeweller was delighted to welcome back the CMJ as headline partner of this event for the second year running. Other sponsors that made the event possible were Brown & Newirth Boutiques, ChloBo, Coeur de Lion and Pursuit.
Editor Ruth Faulkner said: “Congratulations must go to Drakes as a very worthy winner of this year’s top award as well as to all of the other businesses recognised at the event.
“We received over 500 votes in the first round so to have made the top 100 is also a fantastic achievement and it is wonderful to be able to celebrate with so many inspiring businesses that all play their own part in helping to make the UK high street a diverse and exciting place.”
The full list of this year’s Inspiring Independents in association with the CMJ will be distributed as a supplement with the November issue of Retail Jeweller, out on October 26.
