Mary Portas attracts visitors at J&W

Retail expert Mary Portas drew a large crowd at trade show Jewellery & Watch today (February 6).

Portas, who is well-known as a leading figure within the retail sector having previously worked as a government advisor, took to the catwalk stage for a special Q&A session on retail.

From employing the right staff members and wages to the future of retail, Portas recommended both retailers and exhibitors strategies based on her years of experience in helping small businesses.

Mary Portas retail expert advised attendees: “There is a bright future ahead [for independent retailers]. Look at your business and ask yourself, ‘why would people come to us?’ Make it unique and fun. Look at your competitors and do it better. Make it personal and give responsibility to your staff.”

She added: “Be the brilliant small store. Personalisation will be huge in the future. Selling emotion is key for jewellery and watches.”

The five-day trade event, held at the NEC in Birmingham will finish on Thursday 9 February, 2017.
