In January, The Camden Watch Company launched its first, limited edition timepiece. RJ caught up with watch designers Anneke Short and Jerome Robert to discover more about the Tom Sayers No 88.
Q: This is your first limited-edition design. What made you design the Tom Sayers No 88?
A: We first found out about Tom Sayers when we went for a tour at Highgate Cemetery, and we immediately fell in love with the story. Sayers was a real underdog and a Camden boy and the more we researched him and his life the more we loved it. A true London sporting icon, Sayers was the greatest bare-knuckle boxer England had ever seen. We wanted this design to depict his raw talent, appealing to sporting fans nationwide.
Q: How did the design originate?
A: There were a number of elements that came together in designing this watch. We really wanted to create a unique version of the No 88, and we had this idea for a Tom Sayers timepiece, so we started on designs that combined the two and went from there.
Styled upon the vintage military look of our bestselling No 88 watch – we are one of a few watchmakers to still offer the rare wire lug construction – Sayers is personified in time with a unique sketch taking pride of place at the centre of the watch face.
Q: How has the watch been received?
A: It’s going really well. People are really loving the look of the watch and the story of Sayers himself. Our production of just 200 units is selling really well in both the black and brown leather strap options.
Q: Where is the timepiece stocked?
A: We’re selling this watch exclusively, so it can be purchased online at Camdenwatchcompany.com and in our Camden town store. The Camden Watch Company flagship store is located at 88B Stables Market, Chalk Farm Road, Camden, London, NW1 8AH.
Q: What are your plans for 2017?
A: We have a lot of ideas for this year. More shops, more products and some great collaborations. Watch this space and all will be revealed.
