Prestons of Bolton to close after nearly 150 years

Iconic jewellery store Prestons of Bolton is to close its doors today after almost 150 years of trading.

The store, which has been based in the town since it opened in 1869, will close at 5pm today and then re-open on Saturday September 3 for a closing down sale.

A source close to the business told Retail Jeweller that the store will then remain open until all the stock has been sold.

Changing conditions on the high street have been blamed for the decision to shutter the store.

Prestons of Bolton is housed in an impressive four storey building and has been situated on the same site since 1913 and the business was founded by James Preston in 1869.

Today the business is owned by Karl Massey. Massey’s other Preston’s stores, situated in Wilmslow and Guildford, will remain open and are understood to be unaffected by the closure of the Bolton store.
